20 years on the air for `48 Hours'

This past Saturday's episode, "Who Killed the Beauty Queen?," tried to solve the murder of a former Miss Arkansas contestant bludgeoned to death in her apartment in 2005.

The show's mystery lineup is necessary to stay alive while competing against entertainment programs, Zirinsky said.

No newsmagazine not named "60 Minutes" entices viewers now on the promise of learning something new - just like fewer people read newspapers for the unexpected, she said. People want to know what they're getting. That's one factor in the demise of TV newsmagazines, she said.

"So much news is consumed in an individual way," she said. "To get somebody's attention, to get them to commit to you, you have to be unique."

When not shooting crime stories, the "48 Hours" team has evolved into CBS News utility players, springing into action when big stories deserve more attention.

Sarah Connor Chronicles Terminates the Competition

Though my housemates thought Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles would flop, what the hell do they know? While I must admit that I was (and remain) doubtful, the show's series premiere scored big with audiences.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles Opens Big
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles scored the best opening night demo ratings of any new show in three years.

Thanks in part to strong, aka expensive, marketing, Connor opened to an eye-popping 7.6 rating/18 share among adults 18-49 and delivered around 18.3 million viewers with its one-hour bow Sunday at 8, according to prelim Nielsen national data.

While other shows in the same slot did not perform nearly as well -- don't even get me started on the so-called Golden Globes -- Terminator performed amazingly in every way one can look at it.

Senate Poised to Capitulate to Cheney’s Fear-Mongering

Although Cheney touted these companies as patriotic partners in the administration's "war on terror," they are breaking several U.S. laws, including FISA itself, Title III, the Communications Act, and the Stored Communications Act, as well as the First and Fourth Amendments to the Constitution. Indeed, as the Electronic Frontier Foundation put it, "the real heroes are the companies that refused to help [the administration], like Verizon Wireless" and Quest Communications.

Cheney quoted Attorney General Michael Mukasey, who described the need for these companies to defend against litigation as "an enormous burden." What he really meant is that defending the roughly 40 pending lawsuits is cutting into their enormous profits.

The House of Representatives passed a bill without immunity for the telecoms.

New Year, New Cars, New Drivers And Junior Is Back!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the story of the second half of last year's season and most of the off season what with not winning a race since 2006, his public split with DEI, and subsequent signing with Hendrick Motorsports.

Take that Teresa! Junior drove a great race and demonstrated again his prowess at the superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega. He ran up front most of the night, his team executed a flawless pit stop which brought him out in second in the 50 lap finale, and he ran clean and hard with teammates and competitors alike. It was amazing to see Junior, JJ, and Jeff Gordon freight training the high line and keeping Earnhardt at the front.

The race had it's rough moments with a mini-big one in the 50 lap second segment which sidelined four cars (Truex, McMurray, Gilland, and Biffle).
