Student Bands ‘Masquerock’

Beer and Butterfingers usually amount to a mediocre Thursday night, but as counterparts to the first-annual Masquerock at Quincy, they seemed to set a different tone.

There were Halloween jack-o-lanterns aplenty—and even a Great Pumpkin dedicated to a certain UC representative who failed to provide a proper speaker system. Despite the shoddy amps and microphones, a campy sense of fun settled over the Quincy Collective and the three Harvard-based bands that celebrated the whole point of Halloween: dressing up like somebody else. In this case, the bands donned the appropriate costumes to present covers of rock bands Third Eye Blind, and Nirvana.

Buoyed by the enthusiasm of “emcee" and Crimson Executive Abraham J.R. Riesman '08, the Quincy Cage (in the basement of Quincy House) became the epicenter for indie rock enthusiasts at Harvard eager for free beer and music.

Colts Neck man arrested after threatening to shoot police

Court home after receiving a call about a domestic disturbance there, authorities said.

When police arrived at the home just after 5 p.m. Thursday, Leon Murray opened a second-floor window and told police he had a gun, said Detective Sgt. Joseph Whitehead.

Murray threatened to kill the officers so he could be on the news, police said.

The Monmouth County Emergency Response Team was called, but before they arrived, the 50-year-old tried to jump head-first out of the window, police said.

But police used a ladder to secure him, and then they took him into custody, Whitehead said.

Murray was charged with terroristic threats and criminal mischief.

The domestic dispute began when Murray tried to take another family member's car without permission, police said.

Karibu book chain is closing

Karibu Books started off as a kiosk specializing in books for African-Americans, but over the years transformed into something more.

It became a place where African-American authors could promote their books when mainstream stores turned them away. Some went on to become best-selling authors.

Now, after 15 years, Karibu (ka-REE-boo) is going out of business, leaving behind what some say will be a cultural void.
