FDA Advisory Panel Recommends Against Approval of Merck's NDA for Non ...
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors interfere with cholesterol synthesis and as such might theoretically blunt adrenal and/or gonadal steroid production. Results of clinical trials with drugs in this class have been inconsistent with regard to drug effects on basal and reserve steroid levels. However, clinical studies have shown that lovastatin does not reduce basal plasma cortisol concentration or impair adrenal reserve, and does not reduce basal plasma testosterone concentration. Another HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor has been shown to reduce the plasma testosterone response to HCG. In the same study, the mean testosterone response to HCG was slightly but not significantly reduced after treatment with lovastatin 40 mg daily for 16 weeks in 21 men. The effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on male fertility have not been studied in adequate numbers of male patients.
Reliever Williamson agrees to minor league deal with Giants
SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco Giants agreed to terms on a minor league deal with reliever Scott Williamson on Sunday and invited him to spring training. Williamson, the 1999 NL Rookie of the Year who turns 32 next Sunday, is scheduled to report to the team's spring training complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Wednesday with pitchers and catchers. The right-hander could bolster an already deep bullpen. Williamson spent his first four-plus seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and has also pitched for Boston, the Chicago Cubs, San Diego and then Baltimore last season. He went 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA in 16 outings in 2007, missing time early in the season while on the disabled list with tightness in his throwing arm. .
Amy Winehouse's Grammy Performance — Love It or Leave It?
While Amy Winehouse couldn't quite make it to last night's Grammy Awards in LA, she still performed during the show via telecast from London. It was her first big outing since saying yes, yes, yes to rehab and the night's big winner looked a lot better than she has recently. That being said, I'm sure she still has a ways to go in terms of getting better. Check out the performance below (where she changes the lyrics to "Rehab" to talk about her "Blake incarcerated") and let us know — love it or leave it? .
Police pursue leads in Rowan student's death
Five days after the fatal beating of a Rowan University student, police continue to interview potential witnesses and obtain tips from an anonymous tipline. A $50,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people involved in the Saturday night attack that killed Donald "Donnie" Farrell, a 19-year-old business major from Boonton Township, Morris County. At least four men stopped to ask Farrell for directions to a party shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday. Before he could turn to Beau Rivage, the apartment complex across Bowe Boulevard where he lived, at least one man punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground. The teenager died Sunday from a ruptured blood vessel in his neck. The blow to his neck, either a kick or a punch, police say, ruptured the right vertebral artery, which carries blood to the brain.
